Causes of Low Brake Pressure in Your Mercedes

Mercedes models are built to provide drivers with high engine performance and unmatched comfort. They may develop issues with the brake system, resulting in low brake pressure. The braking system is an extremely important component of these vehicles and should be routinely inspected and maintained to prevent failure. Below, we have outlined some of the most commonly-reported causes of low brake pressure among Mercedes owners.

The Importance of a Functional Braking System

All vehicles, regardless of the make, model, or transmission type, are manufactured with a braking system designed to allow drivers to slow down or come to a complete stop when applying pressure on the brake pedal located to the left of the gas pedal.

When you are driving your Mercedes, regardless of the model, and find yourself needing to slow down to make a turn, allow a pedestrian to cross, or come to a complete stop at a red light or stop sign, you press your foot down on the brake pedal. This signals the hydraulic braking system to multiply the force of your foot into enough force to allow the brakes to stop the vehicle.

The brake system must continue working appropriately. Without it, there is an extreme risk of danger to you, other occupants in the vehicle, and all others surrounding you on the roadway.

Common Causes of Low Brake Pressure

When the braking system in your Mercedes begins to become less responsive, drivers may experience what is known as “spongy brakes” which indicates a problem with the brake system. A few common reasons this may occur include:

  • Air entering into the brake lines: Of the many reasons spongy brakes may occur, air in the brake lines is one of the most common causes. The hydraulic pressure allows your vehicle to come to a stop when you apply the brakes. This must be evenly distributed to work as intended. However, when air enters into the lines, there is an imbalance of pressure, causing your brakes to be unable to stop your vehicle as quickly as it should.
  • Damage to the brake lines: The brake lines are extremely important in the brake system. When the brake lines rust, bend, or break, there is an increase in the effort needed to apply the brakes to stop your vehicle.
  • Low brake fluid levels: Brake fluid is designed to convert energy from applying the brake pedal into the force needed to stop your Mercedes. Over time, brake fluid becomes too thin or begins to leak resulting in the inability of enough force to be produced to stop your Mercedes. It is imperative that you have the brake system and brake fluid regularly inspected and maintained.
  • Broken brake calipers: Excessive amounts of heat are made in preparing your vehicle to come to a complete stop which can in turn damage the disc brake calipers. When these discs become damaged, your car will begin pulling to one side when applying the brakes or you will begin to hear a squeaking noise when applying the brake.
