How To Deal With Your Maserati's Chipped & Cracked Exterior

A scratch on the paintwork of your Maserati or a crack on the glass can quickly make your luxury vehicle feel far less luxurious. These are typical problems, but they can be solved if one knows how to go about it. Even if it is a tiny scratch or a large bump these issues should be dealt with to avoid worsening. This guide will help you to understand how to fix the exterior of your Maserati.

Fixing Chipped Paint

Clean the Area

The first step is to wash the chipped area with warm water and a mild soap for better cleaning. This helps in the removal of any dirt and debris that might hinder the whole repair process. Rinse the area with clean water and use a microfiber to remove any form of moisture remaining on the surface before the next process. After that, take fine-grit sandpaper and carefully rub it over the edges of the chip. This step helps to eliminate rust and rough surfaces making it easier for the new paint to stick to the surface. Do not sand very aggressively because this can harm the paint that is around the trim.

Apply Primer

If the chip has exposed the metal underneath the paint, it would be necessary to apply a primer. Take a small brush and dip it into the primer then paint the bare metal with a thin coating of the primer. The primer makes the paint adhere better to the surface and also prevents the metal from corroding.

Apply Touch-Up Paint And Wax

When the primer is dry, you need to apply the touch-up paint. With a fine brush, gently put the touch-up paint on the chip you want to repair. The ideal thing is to apply thin coats repeatedly rather than applying thick coats at a time to give a chance for the previous coat to dry out. It also helps in getting a more even application and a better finish. After the touch-up paint is applied, a clear coat is applied to seal off the new paint. When the coat has dried, put wax on the repaired area to seal it and also give it a polished look.

Fixing Cracked Glass

Assess the Damage

Check the degree of crack. Minor damages such as those that cover just a few inches can sometimes be repaired at home through the use of a glass repair kit. Cracks that are wider or those that hinder your vision need the attention of an expert. Clean the surface of the crack to remove any dirt, dust, or any other particles in the area because this will determine the adhesion of the resin.

Apply the Resin

You should apply the resin with the help of the applicator included in the kit, and apply it to the crack carefully. Begin from one corner of the crack and extend up to the other part of the crack, making sure that the resin covers the whole crack. Ensure that the pressure exerted is enough to push the resin into the crack but avoid excessive pressure that might cause the resin to overflow. When the resin has been applied, position the curing strip over the crack. The strip assists in holding the resin in position and also levels the repair area. Generally, you will have to leave the resin to harden for a while, preferably under the sun or under a UV lamp.
